Ch.13
When the light finally subsided, everyone was in the same place they had been before chaos control began. The only difference was that Shadow was next to Silver and holding the green emerald. Right before chaos control had began, Shadow had snatched the emerald from Silver and harnessed the individual emerald’s power. With only six emeralds attempting chaos control, the power was negated.
Shadow suddenly sunk to his knees and a vision engulfed him.
Me and Maria snuck into an off-limits section aboard the ARK…we planned on eavesdropping on a top-secret meeting between professor Gerald Robotnik, his first assistant, and a man from the government. We kneeled by the door and put our ears against the surface…
“We have reason to believe that illegal actions are taking place onboard this space station. As a precaution we will assume control of this space ‘colony’ and shut it down forthwith.” Outside the room, Maria and I glanced worriedly at each other. What would happen to us?
The door was one of the few original doors onboard the ARK. It didn’t slide open: it was an ordinary wooden door that had a keyhole. As I glanced through the keyhole, I had a good view of Professor Gerald and the assistant, but the government official was hidden from view. “I can assure you,” Professor Gerald pleaded, “that no illegal actions are taking place here. I am specifically following orders. You have no proof and therefore no reason the shut down the ARK.” “Oh, I believe I have all the ‘proof’ I need. Apparently there has been a secret project…a Project: ‘Shadow’? Yes, I believe that was the name for it. This apparently has been worked on for some time now without any permission from the government nor any information about this project distributed to the government. Project: Shadow…Shadow…
“Shadow?” “Shadow?” It was that voice…the same voice as the government agent. The was no mistaking that voice. Shadow opened his eyes and glanced up at the owner of the voice…
It was Knuckles.
“You!” Shadow said, standing up. I don’t know how…and I don’t care! I’m tired of asking questions and not getting answers! Time to take matters into my own hands! “You were the government agent who decided to close down the ARK and separate me and Maria!” He quickly shot several chaos spears at Knuckles, who was too close to dodge them. He was struck and fell to the floor, where he didn’t move. Shadow then turned and his eyes fell on Tails. A vision flashed by, one that didn’t force him to his knees but lasted long enough to allow him another glimpse into his past.
I saw the professor’s first assistant…he looked guilty standing before the government official…like he had betrayed the professor somehow…and he looked so young…just like…just like…
“Tails!” Shadow yelled at the young fox. “You betrayed the Professor! It was you who told the government that they were working on Project: Shadow!” He charged at Tails, who immediately flew into the air, grabbed Sonic’s hand, and flew out through the hole Shadow had made. Shadow chased after them and Silver glanced at Knuckles before chasing after them and leaving the echidna behind.
Tails had flown back into the field they were in earlier when several chaos spears rained down from the sky. Tails dodged a few, but some struck him in the back and he fell to the ground. Sonic managed to stand up and offered a hand to Tails, but before he could reach the fox, Shadow chaos controlled right next to Tails and kicked him-hard-in the side and sent him flying several feet where he landed in a heap. Shadow began to head toward Tails when a familiar voice stopped him in his tracks. “Hold it right there, Shadow!”
The door slid open and the gunman with the green eyes stood there… “Stop. Don’t pull that lever!” “I’m warning you-STOP!” Sonic…that’s his voice…I know it is…
Shadow stared right at Sonic, and the image of the gunman flashed before his eyes again. Then his vision returned to Sonic…then the gunman…Sonic…gunman…Sonic…gunman…
Shadow clenched his eyes shut and finally realized. He glared right at Sonic. “You…” he began, his voice dripping with hate, “you KILLED MARIA!” He rushed forward and punched Sonic in the stomach, which made Sonic fall to his knees. Shadow loomed over him and raised a fist sparkling with electricity. “I will finally avenge Maria’s death. A life for a life…” Sonic, wounded and winded, could only kneel before Shadow…
Shadow was stopped before unleashing the final blow.
He was paralyzed by Silver’s powers and lifted into the air. The white hedgehog came running up and stood before Sonic. “You okay?” Sonic, who was getting his breath back, replied between breaths “yeah…but…Tails…” and pointed in the direction Tails had landed. Silver nodded and looked at Shadow. “But first…” he began, and took out the silver emerald. Shadow was able to see and slowly began to reach for his own emerald. Silver shook his head “I don’t think so,” and concentrated his energy. Shadow remained paralyzed, however his emerald flew into Silver’s hand, who dropped it to the grass. Silver, still holding Shadow, activated his chaos emerald and jumped back. A flash of light appeared right where he was standing.
Releasing Shadow, the black hedgehog fell into the light which vanished a second later, taking Shadow with it…
