Ch.6
“Silver?” Tails asked, still huddled against Rouge, “what’s Silver got to do with any of this?” “Everything.” Shadow replied, not taking his eyes off the white hedgehog. Silver smiled.
Rouge was watching all this when a hand clasped her shoulder. Quickly looking behind her, she was relieved the find Knuckles standing in a hole he had quietly and carefully made in the wall. She was about to speak when he put a hand over her mouth. She nodded and he lowered his hand. She let go of Tails, who didn’t notice her at all, and quietly snuck through to the other side of the alley.
Knuckles then moved on to Tails. Shadow and Silver were staring at one another, waiting for the other to make the first move. Knuckles laid a hand on Tails’ shoulder, and the young fox glanced behind him. Before Knuckles could stop him, he happily cried “Knuckles!”, then clasped his hands over his mouth and looked over at Shadow. The fox hadn’t spoken very loud, but Shadow still heard it and turned the face the echidna. “Tails, go and take Rouge someplace safe.” Knuckles said, not taking his eyes off Shadow. Tails knelt where he was; he was to scared to move. “Now!” Knuckles yelled, and Tails jumped up and ran through the hole after Rouge. Shadow began to run at Knuckles when he was suddenly stopped in his tracks. Knuckles gaped at Silver, who yelled “go and help Tails and Rouge! I said I wouldn’t stand by as innocents get hurt, and I’m keeping my word. Go!” Knuckles ran back through the hole and after Tails and Rouge.
As soon as Shadow had become paralyzed, he had attempted to reach one of the two chaos emeralds he had as he watched Knuckles escape to help the others. As soon as Knuckles had made good distance between himself and Shadow, Silver lowered his hold on the black hedgehog, who had just managed to get a hand around the emerald that Tails had placed in the dumpster. Shadow turned to face Silver again “you’ll pay. You’ll pay for letting them escape, and you’ll pay for destroying my past!” Silver looked worried for a second, then put on a confident smirk that Shadow had seen one to many times on a certain blue hedgehog’s face. “Only if you catch me.” the white hedgehog teased, before running out of the alley, Shadow close behind.

Tails had caught up with Rouge, who had only run for a short time before stopping to catch her breath and to wait for Tails and Knuckles. “Where’s Knuckles?” She asked. Tails looked behind him, gasping for breath “he…let me go…and he stayed…to fight Shadow…” he took a few more breaths before continuing “and we should find another place to hide, until this is over. C’mo-” he said, rounding a corner and bumping into Knuckles. “Knuckles!” Tails happily cried. Rouge smiled “good to see you’re alive.” Before they could continue, Tails interrupted “we need to find another place to hide. And where’s Sonic?” “I can answer both,” Knuckles replied, “Sonic is in another city, far away, being taken care of by Amy. You two can also go and at least get those wounds healed. I’ll lead the way.” Together, they left the city, and headed for safety.

Silver didn’t look it, but he was fast. Fast enough to outrun Shadow in a crowded city. Either that or he was better at winding through crowds than Shadow. The black hedgehog stopped and watched as Silver quickly ran off. Smirking, Shadow held up the emerald that was still in his hand and vanished.
As Silver ran, Shadow suddenly appeared in front of him. Silver ran around and past him, not looking back. Shadow glared at Silver, then chaos controlled again in front of the white hedgehog, who again ran around and past him. Shadow held up his emerald and vanished from sight, only to reappear in front of Silver.
They kept this up for some time, until Silver was on the outskirts of the city. He stopped and watched as Shadow appeared several feet away. He walked toward Silver and stopped a few feet from him. In one hand, he held the chaos emerald; the other he raised into the air, sparkling with electricity. “W-wait!” Silver began, before Shadow interrupted “I know now what happened. You and Sonic used chaos control and opened a vortex through time. Then you, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles want back 50 years and destroyed my past. I don’t know what you were trying to accomplish, but I’m stopping you, right here, right now.” “Shadow, wait.” Silver said solemnly. Shadow watched as Silver took out his chaos emerald and placed it on the ground by his feet. Silver stood and watched as Shadow lowered his hand, yet clutched his emerald tighter. “You should’ve come with me through the portal…” Silver began. Shadow looked confused until Silver suddenly picked up his chaos emerald. At the same time both hedgehogs chanted “chaos control!” A swirling vortex opened above their heads.
Shadow glared at Silver who said, “you showed me the truth about Iblis. Now its my turn to show you the truth…about your past.” Shadow looked down at his emerald, then back up when Silver continued, “you said once yourself ‘follow me if you want the truth.’ Now, I’m offering you the same.” With that, Silver jumped into the portal and Shadow looked down at his emerald again before following the white hedgehog…
